growing flowers

this is my first time growing things by seed (since being very little and my dad helping me plant candytuft :-) )

So far I have got 99% germination rate on the nicotiana -mixed colour fragranced variety. I kindof didn’t read the advice about sowing them thinly so they are now roughly broken up and put into old utterly butterly tubs on the kitchen windowsil. they kind of look like cress. sowed about 2 ago and germinated using the home made propagator made out of a a pot with the top half of a 2.5l coke bottle over it.

I am also using it to germinate some sweet peas, the cupani variety. I sowed them on monday (16th march) I nicked the outside of the seed and sofar some of the seeds are swelling and pushing the small bit of earth they had on top of them off. I can see a bit of root sprouting out of a few of them. um don’t know if they should have been a bit deeper? but anyway once they are bit enough to handle, they are going to be carefully placed into toilet roll tubes and then they can spend a while getting used to being outside before planting out.

I also have some candytuff and nasturtium to sow soon. hopefully this summer the garden can have a nice bit of colour

Hello, welcome to GoY.
You have done well with your seeds. I'm growing from seed this year too. Haven't done much of this or had much success in the past but this year everything is growing like mad.

Hi Katy22, I started gardening 2 years ago and do 90% from seed. It's a great feeling, from planting to seeing them bloom, I love it.

I like the way you are recycling for your seeds too - I do the same. last year I was into those individual cappuccino drinks and have kept loads of cups for doing the seeds, lol. Keep at it and good luck.

cheers
