Birds of prey

Well, after reading horrible story Karen put here today on falcon attacking a small dog in a very strange manner, it made me to share photos I made with falcon in Dubai. It was absolutely calm bird, although I respected his beak :)
In Dubai, some other Middle East countries and also here in Slovakia falcons/birds od prey can be kept and trained only by specialists, who have special exams. To get the licence takes about three years. Also if anyone in the USA is interested in flying raptors he must seek out a state and federally licensed falconer to sponsor them through an apprenticeship period lasting two years at a minimum.
To me all the story looks very strange, as if the bird was trained to do what he did. It reminds me a guy who let his dog attack me last summer.
So, this is blog standing for falconers who take care for their birds as they should and who are normal people.

Lovely photo`s Katarina, the way I read it the owner of the bird in Karen`s blog was a responsible person and sounded really concerned about what had happened, it just goes to show that you cannot always trust a wild bird or any creature for that matter.....

Aha. Ťhen why he let that bird to fly free among houses and in the town or village?

Enjoyed your blog, Katarina. I was in Dubai many years ago (early 80s) but didn't see the falcons. I must have spent too much time shopping, I think. Lol. I lived in Jordan from 1978 until 1983 & visited Dubai several times & always loved going there. You are right .....one should never fully trust a wild creature, as their genetic instincts are very strong, even if they have been raised in captivity. It can take many generations of breeding in captivity to breed those natural instincts out. In the case of birds of prey, the owners probably want to keep those natural instincts sharp, but sadly tragic things like this can happen. I really feel for that little dog & his owner. I know how distraught I would be.

Thank you, Dwyllis. So you didn´t see Singing Fountain there. That was amazing. They are obsessed by the water and this one plays Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli´s Time to Say Goodbye in the midnight. Fantastic show :))

If you look on the photos of Dubain in early seventies and now, that is incredible, what people from all over the world did in the desert.
Birds of prey are kept and trained here in a special school financed by the King. Otherwise this sleepy Jimmy was in a camp, evidently used for cameras, as he standed all kind of manipulation, lol.

I read that it was a secluded path between two places, it does not say in a village or town, I have watched displays of these birds at shows and theme parks, one claps and applauds as they soar over and above, they all have to be trained so therefore do fly freely at times, the owner of the bird states quite clearly that he will have the bird destroyed if the dog owner requests that, he also had insurance, I am sure an insurance company would not cover an unlicenced bird, I feel devastated at the pain the poor dog has suffered, also the owner, however I still say the bird was obeying its natural instincts as was the one in Karen`s garden............

The whole point is that not all are good trainers or even have the ability to train them at all, at the end of the day safety has to come first especially when dealing with any creature even the family pet has been known to turn at times, in the paper today is a photograph of a baby attacked in its pram by another bird of prey, this one was allowed to fly in an area frequented by families with children, the owner was arrested but that does not help the baby.....

Yes, you are right and that is what I say from the very beginning. It is even frightening to listen to these stories. It´s like from Hitchcock film Birds. I wonder, what will happen in next days and what will be reaction of competent people over there.
Did something serious happen to that baby?

Thank goodness they got him to hospital very quickly and they apparently were able to glue his ear back on, he also needed stitches near his eye which luckily was not damaged, it could have been so much worse.......
I think they will have to change the regulations as regards buying and selling, they should not just allow anyone to buy one......

That American guy on the youtube film (above) said exactly - birds of prey are not pets. Falconery is not a hobby, it must be style of life.

Time To Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli is one of my most loved classic pieces, Katarina. I have it on CD & play it on my way to work. My other favourite with them singing together is The Prayer ....I can never listen to this amazingly beautiful piece too much & often have tears in my eyes at the end, as I find it so emotionally uplifting. I loved Dubai. It was my favourite place to visit when I lived in Jordan. I also visited the Emirites, Egypt & Oman .....I did see birds of prey being trained in Muscat. The Arabs are very good at Falconry & their birds are trained by experts.

I do not know how it is in other countries, yet I was interested in falconry in Dubai. The old guy who gave me this bird to make me some photos was quite clever how to make the bird happy and calm. Before the photo he sprinkled him with water, quite a lot (you can see it on the first photo, the bird is ruffled. Then falconer asked me to stroke the feather, whch probably was pleasant as water massage, lol, because the bird seemed very happy :)))
Jordan is one of those modern countries, isn´t it? We have Jordanians here is spa sometimes and the women look very elegant and like Europeans.

Yes, Jordan is modern & quite European in their regard to women .....even in the 70s young women attended university & wore jeans. King Hussein was very pro-British & wanted his country to embrace Westernism as far as the dictates of Islam allowed. I think his son, who rules now, is similar in his ideals for his country.
