stringy beds

we went to allotment yesterday to do a few jobs and decided to use tip from goy and put string across beds in a criss cross manner, ben carefully stapled the string on (i helped and held string) its supposed to deter cats from using the beds.we left just as it was getting dark and there was no one else up there.we went up this afternoon and the string on one bed had been cut, with all that hs happened lately we are begining to think its someone on our site, not nice to say but it seems to be petty things ,brian had put manure on one bed and covered it with a fleece then held it down with bricks and that was sliced,i think if it were kids they would have done more damage like throwing things about and making more mess whereas this is just little things ah well theres nowt so queer as folk!

I think if you are right about who is doing this you should seek some advice? Do you have a group on the allotment you can ask maybe someone else has already dealt with this. You could try applying anti theft dye that might stop them. (I am assuming its legal to use this)

this is not nice. are lots of people having trouble or just you and your plot? was any one asked to leave the site recently?

you could consider cctv or a small video camera set up in a shed etc. not sure how legal it is but people do it to watch for wildlife etc. and if it spotted a 'criminal act' at the same time then what a surprise!

Great idea there with the string I like it, but who in their right mind would want to just go along and cut the string? Someone that is'nt right upstairs I think, yer dead right there Lass, nowt so queer as folk.

hi, its not so much a disappointment more curiosity it seems mindless,we already have anti climb paint on railings, thats what makes us think its from inside the site,it is happening to a few of the plots, but just as i say petty things,we do have a commitee they have a plot further up the lane,we are not council run,but they have suggested dummy cameras but not till next year due to funding, wish i could put a real c.c.tv cam on but as ben keeps telling me (its only an allotment) men who,d have em, love him really

So sorry to hear that Joanella, it is so nasty, yet petty. It does sound as you say unlike what kids would do. Its just amazing what some people do. In the seaside village we used to live in, the local Council gardener would plant lovely bedding all along the seafront. Without fail more than half the plants were dug up and taken every season. Unbelievably, the gardener discovered that the culprit was an apparently upright respected senior citizen who fancied free bedding for his own back garden. So its not always the kids is it? By the way the person wasn't prosecuted, nor was his name revealed, lucky man.

Hopefully they'll soon get bored of it all...petty prankers often do & move on to some other poor victims. It's just such a shame after all your efforts. Good luck with the rest of your gardening!
