Today i went to Salford Art Gallery, i have been many times over the years..i always visit a part of the Gallery called Lark Hill, it is a street from Salford that was to be demolished..houses & shops ..in 1957.. it was decided to take it apart brick by brick & re-build it inside the Gallery..my uncle Bob and his brother Kim palmer were the building firm that had the task along with other construction firms, all the bricks, cobbles and everything there is authentic..i thought you may like to see some of it …

you can dress the part if you like ..

the old gas lamps..

this must have been a posh house ,sorry about the quality of pic,

the ladder in the wall..corner of right hand side..were the "stairs to bed "..

the printers..

and most important … the tea room…

Been to Salford loads of times but always to get wholesale supplies for our shop. I was totally unaware of this museum and it's practically on our doorstep. This will have to go on our list of "to do's" (I bet the grandkids would enjoy it as well. Thanks for all the photos, Joanella. Nice to know your family had a hand in the construction as well.

hi J,yes the grandchildren would like it,i took mine ..Sam aged 9 who asked if my mum was a chimney sweep lol..it is on the grounds of Salford Uni Chapel St if you know it..o))

My daughter will know where it is...we aren't posh enough to have satnav....lol Still depend on the old A-Z....lol

Kids sure come out with some stuff....last night our grandkids were all here and my 6 yr. old grandaughter arrived and came to me announcing..."well nana you didn't die today then..." Huh??? Not exactly music to my ears but we all erupted into laughter. She's a chatterbox...a bit like her nana actually! :)

That's a great way to remember the past,Joanella.I have been to the one at Beamish,in the North East, which is brilliant too...I remember the Dentists surgery... a bit gruesome though.Lol.

9 Oct, 2010

lol bloomer, funny enough i have had toothache for 2 days but even at my ripe old age still too scared to go to the dentist..not heard of the one at Beamish may take a trip to it sometime ..:o)

9 Oct, 2010

Oh dear, sorry for reminding you about the dentist.Hope your toothache goes away soon.I used to be the same, and when we came back to Yorkshire,I really had to visit a Dentist.I was horrified to learn he was known locally as The Butcher, and he had the worst teeth I had ever seen..not exactly comforting, but he turned out to be the best I had ever been to,,and got rid of my phobia, for which I have been ever grateful...

ha ha i can believe that..my fear stems from age 10 i awoke after having a tooth out with gas to hear the nurse say " thats the lot Dr Frankenstien " i jumped out of the chair and never been to one since lol..

I hope you can overcome your fear of the dentist, Joanella....having toothache can really wear you down. I think most of us of a certain age have memories of a Dr. Frankenstein as a dentist but these days they are usually much friendlier and with their latest procedures it is a tolerable visit to get things fixed up. It's getting through the door and making an appointment is the hardest part.

In any case....I sure hope the pain eases for you Joanella. x

thanx J,i know it is a lot better now ..i was the first in the queue with all my children to make sure they didnt have the fear i have & they dont im pleased to say..i would go just once ..to have them all out & have dentures.. but couldnt afford it ..

Where do I begin, firstly thank you for showing them to us. We have something similar in Chester though much smaller. Can someone tell me just what it is that makes us so interested in those times. Most of us remember them but are things any better now..or any worse. In your photos there's so much that has changed, furnishings, food, gadgets, but also names, you don't see names like Brown, Bradshaw or ones ending in thwaite over the shop any more. Another thing is that back then the street was almost self-contained so you didn't have to go far for your needs. I suppose it's like living near tescos today ;-)) It's my belief that soon literally everything you need will be at tesco from birth marriage to death with everything in between. The thing that fascinates me is the money side of it all. Back in those days, 'gross' profit made by the shopkeeper would be spent on on rates staff ect, like now. But, all 'net' profit would also be spent in the community. God only knows where the 1.3 billion profit tescos made this last few months has gone.
The big question is, would you go back to those days? Well I suppose not as without your laptop you wouldn't know it was there LOL
I will however visit when I'm wanting a good day out, thanks again Joanella.

There isn't much that Tesco doesn't provide these days and it's killed off our local shops...no sense of community now as our main shopping area is full of charity shops, banks and a few other shops. There is much concern about the future as there are vacant shops all around.

Heron....I guess most of us shop in the big stores (i.e. Tesco) and not many of us would want to go back to pre-internet days. But the one point you do make which is so valid...all the profits made by these big giants are not plowed back into our communities whereas with a host of small shopkeepers money would remain 'local' and keep communities alive.

I too will make a visit to Salford (another good place is the City Museum in York if you've not visited there...similar to above but on a larger scale).

hi Heron,i would not like to go back to those days..i think it was too much like hard work washing in a " dolly tub " i think they were called, even the irons were made of iron & heavy..i have one in the garage somewhere..washing days, baking days,. i dont know how they coped.i agree with you about the big stores too but i went to Glossop last week and the high street is like the old fashioned way..all the old shops down the main street and i thought to myself then..it must be so time consuming doing your shopping in & out of all the little shops especially if you have a gossip in each one i would never get home lol not that im a gossip you understand...:o))
same up here too J, i try not to get too much from supermarket..but it is getting harder as you say small shops closing so we depend more on big stores..will try to get to york to have a look in the museum there..:o))

I'm still trying to get over the image of you "washing in a dolly tub'' Joanella. That would create some gossip on the high St lol

10 Oct, 2010

not a chance Heron..my mums called Dolly though lol

As I live in the Northeast Joanelle Beamish is very close to where I live, I have been quite a few times mainly school trip's.It is quite expensive to get in but there is such a lot to see, pit cottages, the school, the co-op and the dreaded dentist. You can ride on the tram to all the various locations. It is well worth the visit you can even go down the pit!

I was born and brought up in Salford during my early years and know it very well, we lived with my Gran for a number of years and she used a Dolly Tub and a Wringing machine, dont know if you know Peel Park but that was my play ground and I used to go to the libray there with my Mum what a treat it had glass revolving doors and a lovely distinctive smell of old books mmmm happy days but hard ones too;0)

11 Oct, 2010

Blimey, just love this blog, Joan, and the sign of bleeding by leeches brought back memories of my departed Grandad. He underwent that in his early years in the Army, mind you, he lived to be 100 so it worked for him ! Oh, are you competing with Friends Reunited on this blog .. lol !

12 Oct, 2010

hi Shirley ,fancy your grandad having that treatment must not have been nice but there again if it worked it was worth it..i know how about that with me & PP we have been PMing & know all the same area brought up 10 mins away from each other went to the same places ..the only difference is our ages.. small world :o))
