great Jacque, can't be bad 2 trees for the price of one.

13 Jan, 2009

Hi Jacque, your garden is full of surprises! Good luck with the walnut - we've got a walnut tree, been planted about 6 years now, about 10 feet tall but still no walnuts :-( Like you say, might be several years before your's produces, LOL.

13 Jan, 2009

What a bonus. If you tried planting a fresh walnut it probably wouldn't germinate - a squirrel buries it - and bingo!

13 Jan, 2009

Squirrels are the ultimate gardeners, aren't they?? Well done Jacque.
Walnuts grow very fast and are lovely to look at. I had a baby one once. It got run over by the tractor, chopped off by the bush whacker towed behind and left with absolutely no water as I thought it was a gonner. It sent up three beautiful, healthy shoots within a month. Tough trees.

LOL should have read both blogs before commenting, good idea to keep it in your barrow Jacque to see how it progresses..

Thats a real bonus Jacque , when we moved here we had a lovely big walnut tree it was loaded with nuts , I even tried to make pickled walnuts , a family favourite , about 5yrs ago it died suddenly the bark was peeling of at the bottom and was black underneath .we suspected Honey fungus .......
The squirrels did bury them in our garden so like you I have been able to pot one up , it,s about 1ft. tall now ..
Good luck with yours I hope it grows for you .. :o)

13 Jan, 2009

Poor little thing - she'll get bullied by the other squirrels. Especially if she dresses in M&S clothes, hehe.

I dug it out about 2yrs ago Jacque , it was about 4" above the ground enough to see what it was , I took it out of the pot and put it in the garden last autumn !

I can,t wait to see a pic. of Twiggy Awww ....

13 Jan, 2009

What a great find Jacque, have you got space enough to plant it? Hope so! Then when you get nuts on it you'll have to race out and get them before the squirrel!

13 Jan, 2009

BB: When can we expect to hear the patter of tiny feet?? I can't wait!
Going back to the walnut tree Jacque, sorry to rain on your parade but it was about 10ft tall when we set it 6 years ago and its still about 10 feet tall,Lol.

13 Jan, 2009

We picked some pine cones up on a path on a visit to Euro Disney Paris in 2001. Stored them a bit, they had shoots, set them, planted them on and now the trees are about 2 foot high. Havent a clue what they are, lol. Like Xmas trees. These finds mean so much more than going to the garden centre dont you think.

13 Jan, 2009

Agree Dawn..the best things in life are free !

13 Jan, 2009

A great find Jacque,
Please let us know how it progresses and grows. It will make a lovely addition to the garden.

13 Jan, 2009

13 Jan, 2009

Wouldnt mind a beautiful huge off-cut of Burr walnut for the stumpery Bonkers- one of our favourite timbers!

13 Jan, 2009

Are you sure it wasnt any of your Cyril's clan BB! They kindly left the shells though, lol. Jacque: Yes we have a twisted hazel tree, it is lovely and stays quite small.
Grenville: Sorry to be ignorant but what is a Burr?

13 Jan, 2009

OOOOOo Dawn how big excatly does it grow ? Iv seen some for sale only £3.80 is that a good price u think?:) it does get nuts i assume ?

13 Jan, 2009

Hi J, well we've had our twisted hazel for years and its still only about 3 foot high but the nuts we've had are from the common hazel trees, they are about 8 foot high now after 6 years. Not sure about the price, ours were about 40p each but just whips when we set them - apparently if you buy a "good nutter" you'll get a bucket full off a year, lol.

13 Jan, 2009

Thanx for the Info Dawn your Brill now i know which Hazel Nut Tree2look for ;) Im Off Now Jane/Ray, Grenville& Dawn great 2 chat & have some fun Love Jac XXX

13 Jan, 2009

C ya Jacque x

13 Jan, 2009

Hi Dawn,
Burr walnut has lovely marks or 'burrs' on the timber like little curls or knots. It makes it a very beautiful and expensive variety of walnut and is used for expensive furniture etc.

13 Jan, 2009

Got you Grenville, know what you mean now. Well, we'll have to wait a long time before ours matures at this rate. We set it about 6 years ago and it doesn't seem to grow, probably a slow grower like oak.

13 Jan, 2009

Night Jacque watch out for those tigers xx

13 Jan, 2009

i wonder how long it will take to grow into a full size tree...would'nt that be something, being able to sit underneath, or better yet climb, a tree that you planted as a seedling!!!....the tom boy in me coming out now! lol
