Hi everyone still very cold, been in my little garden to do some tidying but to cold for anything else, I don’t know if any of you could she’d some light on this but we keep getting swarms of starlings fly in over they come around five thirty every evening and there are loads of them they are interesting to watch but are makin a terrible mess. My mum says they must be migratin but not at this time of year surely.

If they're flying over at about five thirty that's about dusk so they'll be gathering in preparation to roost I should think. They're very interesting to watch, but yes, it could get messy if there are lots of them!

I don't know anything about birds sorry Jackie, but I wish the weather would warm up a bit. At least it's nice to see the daylight hours lengthening :o)

Yes, they do it all the time just before dusk.It can be a fantastic sight as huge flock of them swoop and swirl around!!!! Although, I don't know why, but I've always found it a little earie!

Desperate for sun and warmth here too

One upside of the starlings is that flocks of them can clear a lawn of leatherjackets in no time at all when they are feeding their young......

I watch a large flock at about the same time as you every evening, it has increased in numbers over the past weeks and puts on an amazing display. I'm pretty sure they do this before they roost as Louisa says.

Plenty of starlings here as well, when they perch on the rooftops and sit watching it puts me in mind of that film "The Birds" not a nice feeling, lol....

It's as if they are all meeting up in a big flock after a long day to have a chatter and catch up on each other's news before they settle down for the night:)

There's a big flock of rooks in the woods where I work and when I'm leaving at dusk they do a lot of wheeling about in great numbers, calling to each other, a very impressive sight, but yes, it does remind me of 'The Birds'!
