Cactus berries

Last year I had some lovely flowers on my cactus Neochilenia crispa. Maybe some of you will remember them, from the photos I posted at the time :-

(Those flowers were last year)

Well now, it has produced these two fat berries :o)

I thought I’d show them to you, because I have never seen them on this one before.

Here’s the cactus on it’s own :-

It’s a rich dark colour, almost black … and has black swirly spines, that are quite wiry.

Neochilenia crispa is native to the Atacama desert in Chile, which is said to be the driest desert in the world.

Maybe it will flower again this summer …

Wow, never seen berries on a cactus before (but the seeds that are sold must come from somewhere!). Are you aiming to ripen them, Hywel? Have your cacti produced seeds in the past? I haven't any cacti at the moment, always struggled to get them to flower.
My son would like some plants in his bedroom; it has two very sunny windowsills so maybe cacti would like it there. Hmm, now there's an idea!

Hywel is very good. Sends you the correct method to
care for Cactii if you ask him.

Lovely to see these flowering and very exciting to see seed pods. My OH had a prickly pear which had flowered before we bought it but it produced some pink pears. They stayed on the plant for several years. It will be interesting to know how long these take to mature.

Thanks for all your interesting comments.

Xela I have seen berries on my cacti in the past, but not such big ones as these. I'm going to leave them to see what happens. Maybe I'll sew the seeds .... I have grown them from a pack of seeds once in the past.
Cacti would be a good choice for your son's sunny window :o)

Thanks for adding to Goypedia TT :o)

I love growing seeds from my plants Hywel, with the Calla lilies I gave them a period of cold to incite germination do you have to do anything to cactus seed?

That's excellent Hywel, great pics :-)

Xela, good luck to your son! I had cacti in my teens and my mum's bedroom was the sunny one - and she let me have a table full in the bay window. What a heroine!

Hywel will look forward to the progress of those berries, plants can really amaze us sometimes I remember the first time I saw a palm I had growing in my garden flower I watched it for weeks and just didn't expect the brilliant flower it produced.

I've never seen berries on a cactus Hywel, they look as though they are going to pop at any moment, fascinating, you'll have to keep us updated.......

Nor have I. Those flowers were gorgeous last year. Let's hope you get more this Summer. Fascinating plants.

Fascinating to see and what a complex plant it looks. I love all the tangled spiky thorns around the berries.

Thanks for your comments :o)
I have often seen berries on my cacti, but not as big as these.

Pam I don't think you have to do anything to cactus seeds. I've only grown bought ones, but I didn't do anything to them.

Son's room is to be redecorated in the next few weeks, a cacti garden on the windowsill will be the final touch. Db, I am sure we shall be seeking Hywel's advice, we are so lucky to have his expertise to call on. I would be chuffed to manage a flowering cactus for Sonshine, berries would be icing on the cake!!!
All the best with seed production & germination, Hywel ... if anyone can do it you can!

I,ve sent you a pm link Hywel, I,m sure you are well up in the technique but I found it interesting, sowing fresh seed too
Will you let me know how you get on.
I,m waiting for some bought heuchera seeds to germinate, they can take up to 60 days......
I may try to save some of my own, its just so interesting, you never know what you will get. :0))
