My April garden

I am afraid my garden isn’t getting the right amount of attention this spring. Everything seems to be surviving on minimum attention from me though. T has finally had his hip replacement so can’t help at all. He is doing really well. I intended to mow the lawns today but just didn’t find the time so hopefully I can get them done tomorrow. I was busy cutting out all the old woody stalks and bagging up tons of leaves from the borders. I also made a makeshift raised bed for the runner beans. It’s so long since I did any digging I am feeling a bit stiff tonight although I am feeling really pleased with what I have managed to get done. I took a few photos as I pottered. I won’t chat about them just pop them on.

Yesterday I put together this mini greenhouse for the conservatory and sowed my runner beans and peas to put in it to give them an early start. Hopefully by the time they are ready to plant out we should be frost free. The cucumbers I started last week on the kitchen windowsill have shot up 2 inches and I’ve put them in there too. The tomato seed I sowed at the same time haven’t germinated yet.

So…looking forward to a good summer with T walking well and me able to get cracking in the garden.

Hi HB have a similar situation here..OH has just had a knee replacement..1 week on doing quite well...expect you feel more tired ,I certainly do...each week they will gain more movement. All the very best.

Thank you Julia. So pleased to hear your OH is doing well post op. They say a hip replacement has a quicker and easier recovery time. He had his operation last Friday and he says the pain is easier every day. I can see his mobility improving daily. I didn’t realise how tired I would get though!

I agree Sheila Knee surgery is in its infancy compared to hip replacement. Your husband sounds as if he is doing very well .Same as you,I didn't realise how tired I would feel but as we say it's all in a good cause!Painting is certainly not on the agenda yet!

Your garden is looking lovely with all the spring flowers Homebird.
It must be hard work mowing the lawn as it seems to be on a hill. I love all the blue flowers but not sure what they are.
Just do a bit at a time, not like myself who gives this advice and doesn't heed it herself! lol
I hope your husband soon recovers.

The Aubrieta is fabulous Sheila, as is the Pieris. I think you achieved a lot in the sunny weather, well done!

I managed to get some summer bulbs planted today, Gladiolus and Anemones, so that's another task done.

Thank you Rose, our garden is on the side of a hill. We terraced it as best we could when we moved here 40 years ago making it more manageable. The blue plant is Aubrieta. T has made great strides today, walking better and further and feeling much less pain. I didn’t get as much done today as I had planned but I can crack on tomorrow.

Shirley, Shelley gave me a box of summer bulbs and corms for Mother’s Day. I am going to try and plant them up this week.
I’m glad you got your Gladiolus and Anemones planted. Some lovely flowers to look forward to.

Sheila, I did go a bit mad with the Summer bulbs and am now thinking 'Where am I going to plant these?' !!

I shall have to get the shoe horn out ... :o)

I admire your hard work Homebird. You did such a great job on your raised bed.
Your spring garden looks lovely.
Glad to hear that your OH is doing well after the hip surgery. I am on the list to have one this summer.

So what’s changed Shirley? :>)

Thank you Klahanie. I hope you get a call to have your hip surgery scheduled soon and all goes well. My attempt at the raised bed is a bit Heath Robinson but it will suffice until T is able to construct a nice one.

Hello Sheila, it seems to have been such a long cold spring so far. Even with the sunny days, the air here in the east is still very cold.
You look to have made great headway with your garden, especially the raised bed! All best wishes to your husband on his recovery too.

I didn't realise they were Aubretia Homebird. I have never had them grow so huge.

I've always loved your garden and it looks as lovely as ever, I'm suffering so your husband has my sympathy but it sounds as though he's doing well.....Its surprising what we can do ourselves when we have to, your square garden looks fine to me and will serve its purpose as will the mini g'house, I have two that I use inside my big g'house, during the winter my succulents are placed inside as I no longer use a heater, now I'm using them for my seeds, close them up overnight and they provide extra protection, saves me faffing about with fleece and suchlike......

Your garden is looking pretty, I especially like the Pieris.
I’m glad that your husband is progressing so well after his op. I hope we all have a good gardening year, but first we need some RAIN.

Thank you Janey, out of the wind it’s been lovely and warm but today it’s very overcast and back to cold. Rain has been forecast but none so far. I am hoping we aren’t plunged back into the miserable cold sunless days we had here. Sunny days and rain through the night would be perfect.

Rose, the Aubrieta (Aubretia) are really quite old. A small clump was gifted to me by a neighbour about 40 years ago. It has gradually covered the retaining wall on the back garden. I transplanted some into the top of the retaining wall on the front garden and it’s taken well and is beginning to clothe that too. It’s a nice splash of colour at this time of year.

Sue, I am so sorry I didn’t know you have been suffering with pain and stiffness. I hope you will be in a lot less pain as we move into warmer weather. It’s been a miserable cold, wet grey winter.
I almost gave up on the site for a longtime while the adverts and slow loading problems I was having drove me to despair. I only popped in occasionally for a quick look in. I missed the old company, fun and the pleasure of seeing everyone’s lovely gardens. Then I came across comments about the Adblock and decided to try it. Brilliant….no more inundated with adds and uploading photos and making comments is back as it used to be.
I am going to try and catch up with everyone’s photos and blogs. I have been absent for so long I have missed so much.

Ff, thank you. Rain has been forecast here but none so far. It’s just very overcast this morning. I want what everyone wants….sunny days and rain overnight. The Pieris is the best it’s ever been. I am really pleased with it.
