My soil is slightly acid but this corner is in shade near an apple tree and a bit dry. The plant has been here for almost ten years but I'd say it was surviving rather than thriving :-(

rats you are acidic. i was hoping some one will be alkaline. i have read they prefer it moist so that might be why it isnt 'happy'.

thanks for the propt reply. must'nt forget my manners :o)

My 'bible' says they like acid to neutral soil but that some will tolerate a bit of alkalinity but it doesn't say which ones. I'd say keep giving it leaf mould and any ericaceous compost you can spare

i have placed an order and will dig in lots of leaf mould before planting. as the leaves are predominantly beech should be acidic. i should take delivery in december hopefully in time for xmas. :o)
