They are cut mostly for pulpwood now. We're losing a lot of them to disease. They catch a lot of sea fog laden with a type of lichen in their branches, and that kills them quite quickly. I'll post a photo. Also acid rain blown up here from the US: "The red spruce is affected by acidity within cloud mist that leaches calcium from foliage (needles) causing the loss of needles, which in turn reduces growth rates and can lead to mortality of the tree and ultimately the species." Quote from the Acid Rain Partnership.
