Olea europaea - Olive Tree Grove

Olea europaea - Olive Tree Grove (Olea europaea - Olive Tree)

A small olive tree grove growing in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. It's a very common tree, maybe too common. It's also a commercial crop in California. Photo taken on June 21, 2012.

It's hard to tell, just by looking at them, how old these trees may be...I know our friend in Rome has posted pics of some very venerable ones. The only "olive" I can grow isn't a true olive...it's the Russian Olive Eleagnus augustifolia... Planted one last year in the new garden and it's very slow taking off...fingers crossed. At least it survived our crazy winter. Love these trees...wish they were common here!

Lori:

These trees are most likely 20 to 30 years old. Olive trees grow fast, however, they live for many hundreds of years.

Good luck with your Russian Olive tree! :>)

We are growing this one, very slow over here, 15 years old and still only 3 ft.....

Dottydaisy2:

Wow! That's amazing that a 15 year old olive tree would be only 3ft/1m.

In this climate, and we are in the south, we are lucky to have it this size....

That's truly amazing! It's almost like a bonsai tree.
Most olive trees at the nurseries are 6 -9 ft tall.

And are they very expensive at that size?

1 Jul, 2012

No, olive trees are very cheap...a dime a dozen. lol!

I think a 5 gal. 6 ft/2m tree would cost about $25.00 or less.

Very large trees with gnarled, big trunks would most likely cost hundreds of dollars.
