First Sunflower to open. (Helianthus annuus (Sunflower))

I grew these for the grandchildren and luckily there were 5 really good ones so that meant one each and one for me...lol

Ahh... I'm glad there was one for the gardener :-))

These are the best I have ever managed to grow. They are all only about 4ft tall, but then, they are in small pots so can't expect them to be giants. The flower head is about as big as a breakfast plate with small buds developing in the leaf axils. Eventually the children are going to fasten the seed head to their fences so they can watch the birds feed on the seed.

I'm growing sunflowers this year too and am delighted with the way they attract the bees. I've planted them in the ground and they are about 4 - 5 feet tall. Don't want them any taller in my small garden. That's a great idea to keep the seed heads to feed the birds, I'll try that too!

Beautiful photo & your gdn looks perfect. Mine looks a bit muddle compared to yours, but perhaps we shouldn't compare as we all have our different plots.

Loads of bees in the garden this year Louisa compared to the last couple of years. Nice to see them reappearing in increasing numbers. The children find the sunflowers so interesting and these aren't too tall for them to touch.
The gardens isn't perfect by any means Ff. I have been catching up with your photos tonight and I love your mixed border. I'd like to achieve that look. The photos on the Scilly Isles are lovely.

Sunflowers are irresistible. For years I have had a selection from the mixed seed I put out for the birds. This is the first year there have been none :-( I blame the squirrel!!!

Dratted squirrel....we haven't seen a squirrel for ages. I think the new neighbours cats scared them away.

The last squirrel I saw was red, so he is forgiven!
