Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'

Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' (Cotinus coggygria)

Such lovely coloured foliage. I don't cut it back as it is an elderly shrub!

I've just bought one of these. Can't wait for it to look as good as this!

I had another one - in the wrong place and also getting old. I decided to cut it hard back to get the larger leaves, as per. advice, but all it did was produce long straggly stems, so I got rid of it!

That's gardening for you! Maybe I'll leave it alone then and let it do as nature intended.

Ah, but I inherited mine, and it could be as old as 20 years! I think I might kill it with shock if I did cut it back. :-(

The downside of hard-pruning is that you lose the smoky flowers.

You'll have to wait a long time for it to reach this size, Lily! :-(
