Dont lean on the Floss Tree...

Those are thorns of this young tree. As they get old and huge,the trunk becomes devoid if them.

They are called Ceiba here. I grew one last year from a tiny seedling (in the pot) and it grew 4ft in a year. I wonder how it looks now but I will never know because we are renting another house. The most popular variety here is Kapok, ( Ceiba pentandra)
The fiber is used as stuffing in matrasses and pillows and also spun and weaved into towels. It is water resistant but highly flammable...I believe.
Maya of Central America believed that a great Ceiba tree stood at the center of the earth, connecting the terrestrial world to the spirit-world above.
I usually see them blooming with no leaves on the tree.

I talked via email with Nelson Kirk who did the plantings at that park and he told me Linda and Klahanie, they did get complaints-ha.
So,his crew went over the other Silk Floss tree's in the park and removed all the thorns up to the 5' height level.
This one is on the ponds island.

They could be danger to small children or drunks, for sure :-) and I am sure they do not want to be sued.

That looks a bit vicious, but nature has evolved them for some purpose.
