I love whispy flowers like this :)

Bernieh:

This is my favorite Calliandra species...because it blooms for a long time a grows very tall and wide. I've seen some still in blooming here...they usually bloom heavily in winter.

WOW looks like a little pink fairy

Delonix - I do agree with you. I prefer the pink over the red and these plants add so much lovely winter colour here.

Thanks Blue - I'd never really thought about it but it does look a bit like a puffy pink fairy!!

Bernieh:

Do they become a pretty large tree where you live?

I've seen some very large tree-like specimens here...last
late Fall I posted a photo of a very large Calliandra
surinamensis however, it was too large to show up well
on the photo.

Hi Delonix - I've only ever seen them grow to be around 5 metres tall by about the same width. Mine is only around 2 metres right now but has a width of around 3 metres. My red is about the same size and they both sit on either side of our front gate. They're just now putting on a wonderful display. I would imagine that the flowers would not show up well when taking a photo of a very large calliandra.

So pretty I like

Bernieh:

16 feet / 5 meters is probably the average here...however, I've seen some more than 20 feet / 6.1 meters tall and much wider. These shrubs/trees tend to have a "V" shape.

I've read this plant has flowers all year here...with the heaviest bloom in Winter...which sounds correct, based on my observations.

Sounds right Delonix - during autumn here they have very few blooms but you do spot a couple. I always trim my two back in autumn anyway to try and keep them from getting too leggy.

22 Jun, 2009

Bernieh:

I've seen some of the larger plants look a little leggy. It's a
good idea for them to be trimmed.

24 Jun, 2009

They respond well to the trimming and it keeps the branches from stretching across the driveway - they grow beside the driveway and they have a pretty decent spread.

24 Jun, 2009

Bernieh:

Yes, I know most Calliandra species do well with a little trim just after their heavy bloom. It prevents the huge spread and so many little seed pods.
