Oregano or marjoram is a familiar herb often used to season tomato dishes, roasted meat and vegetables – as well as lots of pizza!

The genus is made up of about 20 species, many of which are attractive to bees and and other insects. Some types of origanum have been bred to have larger pink flowers with a look of hops – look out for Origanum ‘Kent Beauty’.

Culinary oregano or margoram can be dried by hanging bunches of cut stems somewhere dry. Store them whole in a jar in the dark and strip off some leaves when you need them.
