True heather, Calluna vulgaris, has its own genus with over 500 cultivars and is often confused with heaths (Erica or Daboecia). It is suited to moorland and open, sunny spots.

Butterflies and dragonflies will love any clump of heather in your garden. The bees are also frequent visitors and heather honey is very popular with a distinct flavour and bright golden colour.

In varying shades of purple, pink, red and white set against a range of foliage colours that can add interest at any time of year, Calluna looks really good planted in groups.
