Tree_Fern Chamaerops Humilis

They are looking really well Louis, I've just bought a weeny Tree Fern...as yet it is on the kitchen windowsill, but I'm hoping I can rear it...:o)

That's true Janey, very easy plant. I just love ferns, I got a few of them up and down the garden, even in sunny places LOL!!!

Your plants look incredibly lush! I'm glad to see the snow didn't harm. I know Chamaerops humilis - European Fan Palm is extremely hardy.

Have you ever tried planting Blechnum gibbum - Dwarf Tree Fern? This tree fern and all it variants are very widely grown here. I'm not sure how hardy it is though.

I haven't seen the Blechum Gibbum, will keep an eye for it, as it will be a challenge for me. The Chamaerops Humilis is very hardy indeed. It can cope with our weather. I have never given it any protections and it has survived for over ten years.

I just read Blechnum gibbum - Dwarf Tree Fern is native to Fiji. I've had one in my front yard for 5 years...never know where it was native to...until now. It's worth trying. Good luck! : > )

I'm going to look for one of them, and will let you know, if I am successful. I've got to make sure, it will withstand our frosty weather. Will do a search and find out ........... :-)

I've just read its minimim temperature tolerance is around 40 - 50 degrees F/ 5 - 10 degrees C. I guess it depends on how mature the fern is...it may not be the best fern for your garden...it appears to be pretty tropical. It's native to New Caledonia, New Hebrides, and Fiji.
