You can never have too much verbena bonariensis.

These are lovely I like them too Wagger but only learnt this year that they need the crowns protected in winter.

Really???? I have never protected them at all! They self seed all over the garden and come up between the paving slabs and where the concrete is cracked. I just love the spontaneity of them and the way they complement other flowers. I do live near the south coast. Maybe the climate is mild enough for them to survive without protection.

Mine dont do so well and then i found this out so will put compost on the crown this winter.

I don't think they are very long-lived plants, but mine seed themselves all over the place, too!

They are a short-lived perennial as you say Spritz...I find seedlings everwhere, even in areas where there aren't any VB planted, i love them and they transplant very readily Penny....good luck...:>)

I love the way there heads sway above other plants but dont take over the borders.. Verbena's Rock lol..

It's difficult to overwinter them here too - I pot up a few spares each year for the cold greenhouse or I'd only ever have first year seedlings - tall and spindly.

You do surprise me, Wagger! Maybe we need to carry out a survey on how they do in different locations - It would be interesting., wouldn't it!

Weeellllll - what I really meant was in different places in the UK - so you've got a lot of travelling to do with your clipboard, Wagger! I hope you've got a rail card. LOL.

I'll have to swap in my bus pass for one of those, Spritz!

2 Oct, 2009

That would do, but it might take a bit longer. Bye! See you next October! LOL.

Only just heard you - I was so far away. That's a good idea, will you do that then? You're more used to posing questions from your previous career (that's called 'passing the buck').

2 Oct, 2009
