The photo doesn't look quite the same as yours. No black blobs etc.
But I guess yours could be a youngster, not yet got markings. :o)

Amazing creature. I also think its some kind of Hawk Moth. You were brave to let it crawl on your hand...I don't mind spiders but caterpillars .... would give me the heeby jeebs!

In my book their is an Elephant moth and also a small elephant moth they are slightly different there isn,t a pic. of the larva though ,so not much help !

That's very brave! I can tackle most things but not caterpillars. Had one walking along my hallway the other week (don't know why!) but I had to encourage it onto a piece of paper to take into the garden.
