This is a Crown Imperial Fritillary I planted in the Autumn last year, it's poking up through the Cardoon

The Cardoon is the bluey leafed plant and is very easy to grow in most parts of the UK. Grow it from seed or you can get an established plant from your garden centre. It is a perennial and will grow to about 6-7 ft so make sure you have plenty of room for it. It will develop beautiful purple large thistly type flowers and when they dry they are full of seeds. You can leave them on the plant for the birds to eat or collect some to sow yourself. The stems are edible like celery, which was something the Victorians did, but I wouldn't recommend it!!
