Compost Corner......The bit you dont usually see........

From the left..ready compost for the runner bean trench. In the corner is next years compost and where the slow worms are. The 2 blue bins are decomposing leaf mould. The dustbin is bonfire ash...and the black bin is also this years compost..The old compost bags are piled up and kept for visits to the local stables to collect manure....All very neccessary , but always the bit of garden thats hidden................

looks tidy to me milky, but you could always put a trellis screen up with a nice plant to hide the area, just an idea :)

I'd like a corner like this but there just isn't room unfortunately. I do keep all the old compost bags though (in the shed when the tortoises aren't sleeping) to take garden rubbish to our local tip. Unfortunately the council has just announced they are not longer recycling garden waste as its too expensive!

thats so tippical of the council.. get on our backs to recycle then tell us they expect us to take it ourselves,, what do we pay rates for exactly,, sorry but it really winds me up Gee19..:(

The engine room...as Dad would say on the workings/foundation of anything!

14 Apr, 2009

Well you are certainly doing your bit to recycle garden waste, I only have room for one bin but our local council provides everyone with a green waste bin so dont feel to bad about it.

Looks very industrious.

Well Thankyou all.....Not one scrap of our garden waste gets thrown away. Anything that wonts shred up and go in the compost, goes in another big blue bin, that is for burning, and turning into potash, which is usually rose prunings and the Bineweed coming through from next door......and anything else that needs scorching to kill seed germination........waste not want not.............

Well done. All that good stuff going into the soil. I usually fly tip mine in the local park.

Milky:

I wish I could have a compost pile! I've tried a few times, however, too many roaches and other unwanted critters live in the compost here in San Diego.

16 Apr, 2009

Thats sad Andy.......we do get unwanted creatures in ours too, so you have to avoid any cooked foods, but in general...they are good here

17 Apr, 2009

Milky:

I've never though of ever putting cooked food in my compost pile in the past. I generally would just compost old leaves and branches old fruits and vegetables.

The problem is the climate is: it's too mild in Winter and most bugs that die off in the more colder climates will not die here in Winter. Roaches are the biggest problem, they love compost piles...and I absolutely hate roaches.

19 Apr, 2009

Our common pest are the rats and mice Andy..............but some people do put cooked food in and of course, it does cause problems

20 Apr, 2009

Milky:

Yes, we have the same problems here also. However, add about 2000 roaches to the compost pile also. Yuck!!! LOL!

21 Apr, 2009

Ew....No thanks Andy.................
