Iris (Algerian iris / winter iris / iris unguicularis)

Rhizoms with tufts of strong, narrow, evergreen leaves and short-stemmed, perfumed, lilac-blue flowers with yellow marking on the three beardless falls.
Flowers late autumn to spring and excellent for cutting. Sheltered south-or west-facing position.
Divide rhizomes in late summer when necessary.

●地中海の東部沿岸に分布しています。乾燥した岩礫地の斜面に生え、高さは２０～３０センチになります。葉は非常に細く、幅は３ミリほどです。晩秋から冬の終わりにかけて花を咲かせます。花はふつうスミレ色ですが、まれにピンク色や白色もあります。花披片の真ん中には、オレンジ色の筋があります。
●アヤメ科アヤメ属の多年草で、学名は Iris unguicularis。
