Majeekahead's Garden

Christmas Rose

Genus: Helleborus.

Species: Helleborus niger.

got 5 bare root plants free from Gardeners World Mag, via fothergills.

arrived mid january good condition.

HIGHLY TOXIC AND IRRITANT - ALL PARTS OF THE PLANT - ESPECIALLY THE ROOT!!!!!

i have planned to put them in the new bed to fill in gaps and give winter interest in the front garden. - well out of brookes reach! but as the new bed is not ready yet i have potted them up into terricotta pots and i will stand them in the front garden instead for now

Hardy tolerant plants will thrive best in a lightly shaded position. they are not fussy as to soil type, but enriching the soil with well-rotted garden compost or other organic material will help them withstand dry weather.

after flowering cut the flower stems back almost to ground level. in the autumn when the plants die back, remove old foliage and mulch, top dress with bonemeal in spring

when plant becomes overcrowded, divide and replant between october and april.
