Erica Darleyensis White Perfection

This is a vigorous, evergreen variety with stiff, bright green, needle-like foliage that becomes attractively tipped with yellow during the spring. Often considered to be the best white variety available, it produces masses of stunning, small, bell-shaped, pure white flowers in spike-like racemes from December to April. These are the brightest white flowers of almost any heath, making it great for planting in groups to create a stunning, winter groundcover effect in full sun. It’s also suitable for growing in containers and produces nectar that will attract bees and other wildlife to the garden. It has an outstanding, bushy growth habit with upright branches but a spreading shape overall

# Position: Full sun to partial shade

# Soil: Not fussy about soil type but it must be well-drained. Prefers a neutral to acidic soil rich in organic matter

# Rate of Growth: Average growing

# Flowering Period: December to April

# Flower Colour: Pure white

# Other Features: It was found as a sport (spontaneous mutation) on ‘Silberschmelze’ in the Netherlands and has since won the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. Like all heathers, it will produce the most flowers in full sun but is tolerant of partial shade. Although Darley heaths are generally more open and taller than winter heathers, White Perfection is relatively compact

# Hardiness: Fully hardy

# Garden Care: When planting incorporate lots of composted pine needles or leaf-mould into the planting hole. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat, compact habit and to keep it looking tidy
