Grass clippings

Years ago I was taught to leave the grass box off in August and mow every 3-4 days as the finely shred cuttings feed the lawn and help to thicken it. Easy with the old push mowers. This I forgot about when the modern mower arrived with the built in grass box.
But I had an area of thin lawn and no amount of reseeding improved it. About 3 years I stared to sprinkle the fine dusty grass cuttings (taken from around the inner edges of my mower and the sweepings from the patio) over this area after I mowed and now at last I have the thickness of lawn I long wanted in this area with no weeds. Does anyone else do this?

I agree TT, certainly something I might try in future. Thankyou Drc, I never would have thought of doing this! :o)

Yes I do on odd occasions at this time of year just on my back lawn which is quite small and I use an old push mower.
The only problem is that there is a tendancy to walk the clippings into the house, but a small price to pay because everyone says what superb grass.

We do this but only when it is really dry, like now!!! But I wouldnt say we have no weeds though!!

I stopped doing it that way when we had the patio window put in, the grass was forever getting walked into the house. now with brown patches courtesy of Brynner, plus his tendency to dig in the wrong place,it might be a good idea to try that here, Thanks Drc for reminding me,......

I am glad I am not the only one who remembers this. Shame that some good ideas get lost over time because of so called progress!

My Farther always left the box off for that reason. If I did it my four legged companion would bring it into the house. His 'nic-name' is Velrro dog as unless it's rooted it sticks to his coat and as if by magic, it falls off in the house.
