Getting started on our little space

Hi all and thanks for reading my blog. I wanted to share a few pics of our little garden as it progresses into what will hopefully be a lovely space for us (my partner and I) to spend time.

I’m a very recent convert to the garden. A couple of years ago I lost my Mum, and somehow since then her love of gardening seems to have really taken hold in me. Its been incredibly helpful and theraputic during a tragic and difficult time. Somehow I find being out there makes me feel close to her and I can’t help feeling she’s watching over me working with a helpful (and sometimes critical!) eye.

The “garden” as it was originally was a lot of flagstones, concrete, a dilapidated shed and a filled in pond. Not much space for growing.

I resolved to change this! Up came the flagstones, down came the shed, and out came the pond. I installed a new shed (with a lot of help from my Dad) in the pond’s former setting as it was very shaded spot and space is limited for us. I then built a few beds and added gravel paths around them. All that remains now is to put some decking on the corner where the shed used to be – its a real suntrap.

Last years spring bulbs are showing in the beds at the back and our lilac tree is in bud. It’s a heartwarming sight. In a few months I hope it will be awash with colour and life.

Again thanks to all for reading, I hope to be able to post more updates as the transformation takes shape!

Best regards

Nick

Thanks all! I have been lucky with the rocks, the previous owners had left them buried round the old pond! Thanks for your kind words, will certainly add more pics over the coming months.

It looks completely different Nick, your mum would be so pleased to see you have inherited her love of the garden, I always feel closer to my mum when in the garden as she taught me so much over the years.
Enjoy your garden and looking forward to seeing more pics....

It's looking great, your mum would be proud. It was the same for me when my dad died nearly 5 years ago. I didn't take any interest in the garden before, but I love it now. I have one bed that's dedicated in his memory and whenever I'm working on that bed I always feel close to him and often 'talk' to him.

Thank you Lijemc, I do have some of Mum's plants that I managed to get cuttings from, it does help a lot to know I'm tending to something she grew!

Thank you too Jillwilcock - it is exciting! Hope your 2nd year is a success too!
