I know here we have no floods but last night at 10pm i put news on tv went through all news channels, but sky news had the live floods and rescue teams on all night in Cumbria i just could not turn it off, there was airforce, mountain rescue, sea rescue, firemen all working together to save people, i know it as nothing to do with gardening, but those rescue people are so brave alright i know there trained to do it, but the scale of the opperation they had to face was unreal, i watched them till about 9am this morning, the water had receeded quite abit then, but all night they working in water up to their necks, the elicopters where overing above them at some stages to give them extra light, they had to tie rope to each other for safety as well, its suppose to be one of the worse floods ever. I just wonted to ilight what brilliant jobs OUR rescue teams do, so WELL DONE TO YOU ALL.

I second that... they are all wonderful people, the weather men are saying it was an unprecidented amount of rain over a foot? ....

Well done, Clarice, on highlighting the alarming floods and the courage of rescue teams and ordinary members of the public doing their best to help.

I hope pets and wildlife were able to run to higher ground...
.... they have shorter legs than us...

I only saw one little dog alnight that got rescued so hope keeping my fingers crossed more where saved, i know one police officer is missing as a bridge came down that he was on, they reckon it was how quick the water came that did it.

20 Nov, 2009

Yes, I saw film of the fast flowing river near that broken bridge... the current was so forceful, that at first, the rescue teams couldn't use boats there.

20 Nov, 2009

Thats right TT the only way they could rescue any one was with the elicopter, like i say i was watching it alnight, it was like watching a big american drama film. The last rescue i saw was about 8-30 this morning, Cockermouth is a town but in the lakes when it rains all the water runs down the mountains, think they had 12months of rain in a few hours, and its given it to be bad again up here in the northwest again tomorrow, but luckly we in Blackpool have not done bad but i know a police officer is missing, but they managed to get everyone to saftey with no casualties.

Sadly, re. the missing police man, the report is now of a body being found on the beach.... I feel so sorry for his family, friends and colleagues.

Thanks for telling me not got tv on at moment, i feel sorry for them aswell.

Tell me about it,like i said i stayed up alnight watching it, live rescues i was telling TT it was like watching a block buster american film, infact Sky didnot put any adverts on all night, just quick weather alerts.Think i will be in bed early tonight, can feel myself nodding abit now but if i fall asleep wont sleep tonight.

ive been watching it on the news as well.........awful isnt it....

20 Nov, 2009

Holly its terrible, think you feel it aswell when really we're not that far from the lakes, where you are one of my sons lives in West Sussex, he's about 6miles from Bognor Regis.

20 Nov, 2009

its been really windy here and last saturday was awful with the rain.... my son goes on a calvert trust holiday near to where the floods are in the lake district .... he goes every other year so knows the district well......... i live right by the sea front but luckily it hasnt come over...........

20 Nov, 2009

I think the whole country was watching that news as it unfolded.....our hearts in our mouths for those wonderful people who risked their lives to save so many others.
We certainly had our share of floods here a couple of weeks ago - but it was nothing compared to what we are seeing now on TV.
Where would we be without our Rescue Services...they all deserve every accolade available and I hope they recognise in some special way the bravery of that poor police man who lost his life. Our thoughts are with his grieving family.
Let's hope the Met Office have over-stated the forecast for the weekend ...or this tragedy will become a major national disaster.

Great subject Clarice and so it's not gardening but it does highlight the dangers these people put themselves in with the sole goal of rescueing others trapped well done to the rescue teams they deserve every help they can get.

20 Nov, 2009

I felt very sad to read about Cockermouth, Keswich, etc. as we have spent so many lovely holiday in the Lake District. Well done, Clarice, on highlighting the tremendous effort made by our rescue services - they certainly deserve a big pat on the back and a whole lot more.

Hi Clarice it is a part of gardening when gardens get washed away and damaged kind of you to mention it about the concerns of others and the rescue services we have where would we all be with out them, what a wonderful job they do.

20 Nov, 2009

Well said Clarice!! The emergency services have a tough job to do, and are often taken for granted....bless them all xxx

20 Nov, 2009

So sad about the lovely policeman who lost his life saving others on the bridge in Cockermouth.

20 Nov, 2009

I didn't know there were such floods - haven't heard. The rescuers do work very hard in dangerous conditions.

20 Nov, 2009

yes they all work so hard to help people, with having wet summers the rivers arent going down so more rain and rising fast, something needs to be done to protect these villages from the rising rivers, now not when its to late

21 Nov, 2009

And why shouldnt we talk about whats happening eh! Well done C, youre sooo right about the emergency services!

21 Nov, 2009

Agree, but even when it rains ordinary in the lakes it always runs down the fells and mountains, dont think i'd every live near a river or stream, on saying that i did use to fancy it a few years ago.

21 Nov, 2009

thin we all have had dreams of living near a river carol, but not now the way the weather is changing

21 Nov, 2009

Agree think i'll be content with the irish sea :o))) lol.

21 Nov, 2009

lol :o))

We are lucky to have a huge drain here in Manchester, it's called The Manchester Ship Canal, if we did'nt have that I am sure we would be in a similar situation, as it is we just send it all to Liverpool. :o)))))

R.I.P. Police Constable Bill BARKER. Cumbria Police. 45 years of age. Leaves a wife and 4 young children. God Bless You xxx

22 Nov, 2009

Hear Hear....we owe a huge dept of gratitude to all our service men and women who risk their lives that ours are safer. I hope his family get the support and help they deserve..our hearts go out to them at this time as well as to all the other members who have braved the recent storms.

Tragic thing to happen at any time of year, let alone Christmas.
We all hope that this was just a freak flood and a one-in-a-thousand year event, but was it? Climate change, whether we like it or not, seems to be with us. I have a horrible feeling we'll be needing more and more of those excellent rescue service personnel as time goes by. A very big thank you to them for all they do.

23 Nov, 2009

Right on Sue R.I.P. Bill Barker he was just doing his job, my thoughts and condolences go to his family what a sad loss.

23 Nov, 2009

I'm right beside you Bob and Sue R. I. P Bill. Bless the people in Lakes as they still got lots of problems ahead of them. think most of the animals was safe aswell, as the sheep etc luckly in the lakes they could keep moving higher up the fells. So well done again to all rescue teams once again. The army as as now been moved in to help aswell.

23 Nov, 2009

And its going to rain a lot again tonight, apparently another four inches will fall on Cumbria, BUT! say the weathermen that is nowhere near as bad as what has fallen...........BIG DEAL! a fat lot of good that is going to do to the already swollen rivers and the damage that has been caused, I wonder sometimes at the things the presenters come out with on T.V.

23 Nov, 2009

Ain't that the truth Bob. 4" makes a BIG difference as the water gets into people's houses ! :~(
