THE BEAUTIFUL LADY EMMA HAMILTON (No wonder Nelson fell for her)

I bought these beauties yesterday and planted them in my small front garden and as it was so warm yesterday, I gave them a thorough watering…ha! Today at about 10am it became so dark that the street lights came on and we had a dreadful, very long lasting stormy downpour. I went out when it let up to see what havoc had been wrought and this is what I saw:-)

Even this lovely fully open flower was not too badly damaged, she certainly is a tough lady.

I’ve never known weather like this before, but I can now say this rose is one of the tougher ones and the perfume is fantastic. I’ve still got a lot to do in my small front garden so it’s still a mess:-)

You`ve made a start then Ba, like the colour of this one I think Hot chocolate would compliment it.
Wasn`t that weather awful we had tremendous thunder and lightening with it, good job there was some exciting tennis on.

Thank you all for your kind comments, it was awful yesterday and today she's being attacked by strong winds as are all my poor long suffering plants, Stroller I suppose you've got the same? How has the weather been fo everyone else?:-)

I'm not that far away in the East Midlands but we had none of your weather. It was muggy but sunny. The wind has picked up today though.

29 Jun, 2012

I'm getting a little fed up with it Dd, I heard on the radio that summer will start in September! :-)

Beautiful colour, I am glad the rain did not spoil it.

I have this BA and I was wondering if mine was doing quite well because it is under trees and big shrubs which protect it from the worst of the rain...glad to see yours is doing well in a more exposed position. It is a terrific rose, and lovely perfume too. The new foliage is a gorgeous bronzy hue and seems to be very disease resistant, and my shrub is now quite large...probably about 3' across and about 6' tall. It flowers a long time. Last year, mine was still going in December. Great choice! :D

30 Jun, 2012

Wow...six feet tall! The perfume it was that hooked me Karen and the lovely shaped flowers. The colour of mine seems more gentle than pics I've seen too. I went for a pinkish one to compliment the Queen of Sweden in the two front beds, but there were none I liked and Emma sort of stood out. Do you have yours as a short climber? If she needs support as she grows, what do you recommend? I'm not very good at that sort of thing and it must look nice:-)

BA, it is lovely, but I've been out today and it definitely needs some support, it's flopping over. I just keep it as a shrub, let it do it's own thing really. I have tied the 6' high part to an obelisk as a temp measure, but I need to get in there and sort out the rest. Think for now I shall just tie string right around the whole thing, about half-way up. Next year I shall get a big circular metal support on legs for it. Might actually do that soon....instead of the string I could buy two semi-circular supports and carefully push them in around it.....I'll let you know how it goes! :D

30 Jun, 2012

Those two semi circular support sound a good idea Karen, do you know who sells decorative ones that would be there permanently? Not that I need them immediately, but would like to know for when I do. :-)

Its amazing how they shrug off the weather and just carry on flowering. Its beautiful.
