Two Of My Best New Plants

I would be interested to know which plants are in your top ten so I’m showing you a couple of mine which I can’t praise highly enough. Any flower in my top ten has to flower for ever, be easy to look after and be beautiful. First is Geum Totally Tangerine. Here it is in my trolly at Malvern Spring Show 2011. This geum, in my opinion, has none of the brashness of the red or orange geums…it has an airiness which I love and its colour is quite gentle. I wonder if it is a rivale cross? It has its grace I think. It has flowered since I bought it and is still flowering now!

Here it is now lightly frosted yesterday, 29th Jan:

Here it is mingling with Echinacea Arts Pride:

Here it is with my other choice… Polemonium Northern Lights. This starts off as an amazing sky blue not quite caught in these pics. I have a rubbish camera.

It has a lovely form too.

Here it is in close up:

I would thoroughly recommend either of these plants and only wish my camera did them justice. The geum was from Hardy’s and the polemonium I bought on Ebay:-)

Love the Polemonium, not just the flowers but the foliage as well, beautiful.

That Geum is lovely,Ba..and I agree about the shade of it,not an'in your face'orange..!Polemonium,or Jacob's ladder.. is one of my top favourite plants too..along with most Fuchsias..but 'Gary Rhodes' in particular.Others in my top ten,are Echinops,Heucheras,Delphiniums and Alliums...in fact the list could go on and on.:o)

I love that polemonium, mine didnt do as well as yours, I like your idea of selecting two favourites, if we all did that we should have a great wish list!!
Mine would have to be different because of the shady garden:
for me it would ideally have colour in leaves or flowers for a good amount of the year, shape is important to me, scent is definitely good but you cant always have everything!!
For this garden I might choose a pierris, there is always colour and something interesting and probably an acer, I like the ones with the red stems.

Lovely blog Ba . . . I've added it to favorites, as I love both the ones you've chosen. Plants I own which flower for ever are Spiraea 'Cerro Posti' - a lovely shrub with deep pink blooms; all my perennial Nemesia, especially ones with mauve and white flowers; Malva moschata alba, the "annual" white mallow which seeds itself around; most Campanulas, and Phlox, especially 'bright eyes'. Oh, and Pieris 'forest flame', my useful Epimediums for leaf colour in shade, and Cotinus for its beautiful copper leaves as a backdrop to the others!

Two lovely plants, Bornagain.
Good choices :o)

i love these but dont think I can chose top 10. thats like chosing a favourite child :o)

Oh Ba, you`ve done it again I thought my list for this year was complete and now I just have to add these two they are stunning.
I don`t think I could narrow my choice down to two plants as there are so many I just love.

I love the Polemonium Ba, never had one before but will have when I move. My list is very long but I would recommend Erodium 'Spanish Eyes', it flowers forever and has beautiful ferny evergreen foliage.

Sounds my sort of plant Annella:-)
Stroller I narrowed it down to two as it took ages looking through my pics to find what I wanted then getting lost in summer garden pics:-)
Sbg, these are not necesarily my only favourites, just ones that flower for ever and are pretty and easy. I find favourites change through the season too:-)
Thanks Terra:-)
Sheila you make some lovely choices, some which I have. The musk mallow grows here like a weed, albeit a beautiful one and has rather deep tap roots, but I do love it. Unfortunately all my 'perennial' nemesia have vanished, must be too cold here:-)
Bilbo, although I would love to grow scabious, they don't like it here, probably too acid?:-)
Hi Sticki, I love pieris and acers too, fortunately I have a slightly acid soil:-)
Hi Bloomer, lovely choices again, must look up Gary Rhodes:-)
Thanks Willinilli, you won't regret it if you buy one:-)

I love that Geum so much BA. This year I started with two tiny roots of Geum 'Mai Thai' which is gradually starting to grow and has a tiny flower on right now. It is another soft colour..pale peachy apricot shade. I shall have to have a think about my top 10 though...that would be a good blog to do on this miserable day!

31 Jan, 2012

Hi Karen, Mai Tai does look beautiful, I was desperate for it last year lol. I think I would rather buy it as a decent sized plant to make sure and then I could also see if it's a beautiful as it looks in photos. I wonder when it will be offered in garden centres? I do have quite a few different geums, all seem to be good doers apart maybe from Eos which hasn't grown much, but still quite new so may be better this year:-)

31 Jan, 2012

yes, I think you are wise about the Geum. It cost a fortune and only one of the two grew, and it will be this year (third year) before I actually get any real flower. I planted a few Geums last year...they are so pretty and of course the 'Rivale' does well in wet, so that's a must for me here!

31 Jan, 2012

It would depend on the garden for me BA...I would not be without my Cotinus it is fantastic in it's own right, but also such a good foil for many flowers. That Geum would work well with it. I always have runnerbeans and Nasturtiums as well. I love the Polemonium but it went beserk in my last garden and suffered with powdery mildew a lot.

Love that geum Bornagain, very pretty colour, I have a very bright (need sunglasses) orange, yours is a much nicer colour.
My favourite 2 must be my roses and of course the daylilies, no surprise there :-))

31 Jan, 2012

That is a pretty Geum Ba, especially with the Jacob's ladder, those colours together are a favourite combination of mine. I bought a new Geum last Autumn, think it's Mrs Bradshaw, though, so a vivid red one, but then in a sunny spot it'll be nice and bright....:o))

31 Jan, 2012

I have Mrs Bradshaw Janey in front of a cotinus, she's a very robust plant and flowers for so long, I'm sure you'll love it:-)
Simbad, I know about your daylilies lol, but which one gives most to your garden? :-)
Hi Pimpernel, was it p. Northern Lights that was mildewed? It's supposed to resist it. I bought some nasturtiums last year, they looked beautiful on the packet, and true enough, each individual flower was very beautiful, problem was I couldn't see them for the leaves. I spent some time snipping off the leaves, but gave it up as a bad job lol:-)
Kanren, g. rivale Leonards Variety is another of my favourite plants. I don't know if 2011 was 'special' but it flowered almost not stop and so graceful:-)

1 Feb, 2012

Mmm now thats a hard one Ba, love them all and my favourite changes from day to day, 'Big Bird' is a really old favourite though, not fancy coloured just plain yellow with huge 7inch flowers and absolutely covered in them for weeks, the only one out of my whole collection that OH ever comments on!!!!

1 Feb, 2012

It wasn't Northern Lights BA....The flower was not quite as nice. Pick the Nasturtium leaves for salads.

1 Feb, 2012

Never thought of that Pimpernel. your name sure is hard to shorten;-)
