EARLY MORNING FROST - At Foxhollow

A few more pics to show the early morning frost here at Foxhollow, certainly makes a change from all the dreary wet and windy days we have had for the last few weeks.

Bare stems of Emmenopterys henryi in center of pic, fairly rare in cultivation.

The spent stems of Miscanthus sinensis ‘Little Zebra’ glowing in the early morning sun.

Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’, a young plant of a new Berberis variety also seems to glow in the early morning sun

Abies procera ‘Blaue Hexe’, just beginning to catch the early morning light

Leucothoe axillaris ‘Curley Red’, close up of foliage – this ones for our Barbara (spritzhenry)

Looking down to the main boundary, Abies nordmanniana ‘Golden Spreader’ in the foreground with the tall narrow Sequoiadendron giganteum ‘Pendulum’ to the left.

Frosted cobweb on a summer flowering heather, Culluna vulgaris ‘Kinlochruel’

Pinus aristata ’Kohout’s Hexe’ – Probably hard to distinguish the plant’s natural resinous flecks that appear on the lower needles, from the frost which is sitting on top of the upper needles.

The usual shot from the far end of the garden, with the sun blazing directly into the camera

Frosted stem from a Picea bicolor ‘Prostrata’

Bernieh - thanks for your comments.
Clouded over here since lunchtime Mavis, very dreary now indeed.
Marguerite - not quite so lovely as you may think, what you don't see is the very busy main road on the other side of the main boundary, the scruffy allotment opposite, and unkempt lane full of old bricks broken tarmac and potholes. :0(

Ooh its worth shivering to see sights like these. Beautiful. That is definitely one of the big advantages of conifers isn't it Bluespruce? Their beauty in winter is unsurpassed.

11 Dec, 2009

Thanks Derek :0)
Mad - I'm one of those that needs no convincing about conifers anytime of the year, but yes you are right, come the winter and they are unsurpassed, especially mixed with other contrasting plants like ornamental grasses and perhaps colorful bare stems like many of the dogwoods for instance, and not forgetting winter flowering heathers of course.

I love the Emmenopterys, so too the Picea Blau Hexe - but i told you that last time ;-)
P bicolor Prostrata is nice too.
Orange Rocket looks like a burning fire - it's lovely.
And the sun into the camera shot looks kind of Narnia-ish :-)))
