Easypeasy cake ,done mostly in a pan..from a very old Bero book…lovely and moist, and keeps well,or freezes..
12 oz mixed dried fruit
4 oz Sugar.
4oz,soft margarine or butter.
5 fluid oz (quarter of a pint) water.
1Egg.
8oz S.R Flour.
7"" round cake tin,or 2lb loaf tin.
Method..
1.Put fruit,sugar,marg,and water in a pan,simmer slowly for about 15 minutes.
2..Allow to cool, then add beaten egg,and stir in flour.
3..Turn into greased,and bottom lined tin…
Bake in very moderate oven..
300-325 F…160 fan oven,or Gas 2-3 for 1hour,30 minutes.
This is one I made last week, and still moist..I prefer to make it in a loaf tin,as it is easier to cut into slices..amazed there is some left, but been out a lot ! :o))

I have that recipe, and make it often. Can recommend it. I have even made it for a christmas cake, but added nuts, cherries, spices, etc, and then laced it with spirits. Lovely.

I also have that recipe and made the cake last week and can confirm it is so easy to make and lovely and moist,I intend to make it as my christmas cake also with lots of nuts and maybe a little of the amber necter ...hic !!

12 Sep, 2011

that amber hiccup is an excellent addition to any cake!!

12 Sep, 2011

I think you will like it,Grandmage..I find its better to leave it till the next day,to settle, and it makes it easier to slice..but I don't always do that..depends how greedy I am Lol :o)))

12 Sep, 2011

Brillant, just popped it into my favs, will make it this week, thank you

12 Sep, 2011

Thats nice of you,Yorkshire..hope you enjoy it.:o)

12 Sep, 2011

we will Bloomer, how's the wind over the hill, can't see our garden for leafs, looks like a bomb has dropped here,

12 Sep, 2011

With the great pic of that lovely cake, I reckon some folk could put on weight just looking at the photo ;o)

12 Sep, 2011

very very windy, but no damage done in mine, surprisingly, ,Yorkshire.you have got a lot of clearing up to do,by the sounds of it..not a nice thing to come back from holiday to
face..

12 Sep, 2011

Me included Terra..Lol..thanks :o))

12 Sep, 2011

we have just been looking out Bloomer, its really bad,

12 Sep, 2011

Well,if you look at it another way,Yorkshire..at least you and Ralph are both safe,as is your home..so just think the leaves won't be dropping off later..but I am sorry about your lovely Begonias.has it broken your pots too ?.

12 Sep, 2011

no pot damage I am pleased to say

12 Sep, 2011

looks very yummy.... : O )

12 Sep, 2011

Just put the recipe in my favourites. I have not tried it before although I do have an ancient Bero book on the shelf. I have just put 5 banana and walnut loaves in the oven. The oven is a bit hot today because of the gales. If they do not come out burned I might give it a go later. It looks delish.

12 Sep, 2011

Scotsgran, any chance of your recipe please,

12 Sep, 2011

I have a message saying error on the page. I just typed it in but could not send it so will try via a pm.

12 Sep, 2011

thank you

12 Sep, 2011

Added to my favs, it looks delicious, cannot try it until I go shopping as Mr Robin has eaten most of my fruit, lol.

12 Sep, 2011

Thank you,Scotsgran..I bet if you look in your old book,it will be in there..It was my mum's recipe book...I haven't tried Banana cake with walnuts, but I make Banana bread, which is nice with or without butter..but I suppose it is really more of a cake, than actual bread..we have it as that,anyway..

I'm glad your pots are ok at least,Yorkshire..:o)

Thanks Holly,it tastes yummy too..we have just had a piece after our meal tonight..only two bits left :o((

Thanks Lincslass..you will have to buy a bigger packet..I wouldn't want to deprive little Robin of his treat..he would probably like some left over crumbs of the cake,if you have any !:o)

12 Sep, 2011

I have a relatively new Be-Ro book ~ the recipe is quite different for fruit cake ~ this one looks much better.

12 Sep, 2011

Maybe the ingredients for the new one, weren't available in those days,Sticki..is it much different ?

12 Sep, 2011

very. it is rubbing in method ~ it isnt a boiled fruit cake at all. such a shame.

12 Sep, 2011

It might be nice,Sticki, but I will stay with one I know, and like.."If it aint broke, don't fix it,"as the saying goes..although I make a rubbed in milk chocolate cake from my old Bero book, which has evaporated milk in it..

12 Sep, 2011

that sounds nice ~ do you have the recipe for that too please?
i like the boiled cake versions, they are so juicy! i have one that contains sweetened condensed milk.

12 Sep, 2011

I have loads of cookery books, all by fabulous male hunks, but I keep returning to my books of the 70's and shifting my guys up to the loft.

My favourite is 'The Dairy book of Home Cookery' full of good old fashioned stews and cakes.

12 Sep, 2011

You're at it again, Sandra ... a blog involving food! ... But I thank you for it as it's gone on to my Favourites for those 'non-diet' days ... lol!

Sticki ... if that chocolate cake with evap. is the one I'm thinking of ... you will love it! ... :o)

12 Sep, 2011

my favourite topic ~ food!!!
i have loads too grannyb ~ i have dairy diaries with recipes in and a dairy cook book; the old faithful is the best of good housekeeping published 1973; i also have my notebook from cookery lessons in school and an old diary in which i recorded recipes before i left home!!

im looking forward to that chocolate cake shirley

12 Sep, 2011

Scots gran I hope you won't eat all five cakes at once.LOL

It's sad really, but the young girls today don't know the joys of baking.

Neither of my sons partners can cook let alone bake. I have given them cookery books for Christmas and birthdays, but in one case to no avail. In the other she is trying and is a pretty good baker I have to say.

Both my sons cook and my eldest really enjoys cooking, he sometimes tells me how to do it.LOL talk about teaching your granny to suck eggs.

I think I've mentioned before, I am keeping two cookery note books full of recipes and anecdotes for them.

12 Sep, 2011

Well,Sticki,I have been through all my pics and blogs ,but can't find it anywhere...I know I have sent it to a few,via a PM,but was sure it was already on here.I must have just shown a pic of it,for Thomas's first birthday in April this year,,as his mum made one for him...Shall I send it to you,or put it on here..? Maybe I shouldn't post an "other"just yet..speak later..going to watch new series of Doc Martin now.:o))

12 Sep, 2011

I forgot to put the wlnuts in silly me but the cake tastes fine. First day of baking we usually manage to get through most of one and then I cut the rest in half and freeze them. Half is enough for 2 of us on anyone day.

12 Sep, 2011

im watching it ~ its great.
you might find the recipe on your sent messages??? but if not dont worry.

12 Sep, 2011

Sticki, worry no more..Look at my blog on 9th April this year..Thomas's first Birthday..and the recipe is on there..I can't take credit for finding it..my lovely friend,Shirleytulip had saved it,and sent me a PM to tell me where it was..and I have only just read it ,after Doc Martin..Isn't that great ?but fancy me not remembering..I knew there was a pic of it,but forgot I had written out the recipe for other members there.Thank you Shirley, for saving me having to type it all again..and sorry, I know you said to read it before the TV programme..too late ! All's well that ends well.:o)))))
I have just had another look at comments on it,Sticki..you didn't leave one,as I am sure you would have remembered, being a foodie..Lol.

12 Sep, 2011

12 Sep, 2011

12 Sep, 2011

Ooooh! Bloomer or Scotgran : You've got a copy of the old Be-Ro book! Any chance of posting the recipe for "Melting Moments" please? My Mum used to make them when I was a child - when dinosaurs walked the earth - and they never stayed around long as they were just soooooo delicious! Somewhere along the years the book was lost, went missing or got thrown away, but I still remember Melting Moments. :o))))))))))
