November Daffodil surprise!

How many of you have seen Daffodils flowering this week in your towns? What, in November? I hear you say! Well there is a park close to where I live that DOES have Daffs in flower – in the ground! Want proof? Have a look at these photos I took yesterday:

Trinity Free Church gardens: Narcissi flowering at back of building

At least 6 years or more ago I planted some Daffodils at the back of my church’s building where there is a very narrow border at the foot of the wall (about a foot wide). 3 years ago I noticed some Daffs were coming through very early so I kept my eye on them & I was most surprised to see flowers in December!

They look like 'Paperwhites' which do flower earlier than others. I've never seen them open in November though.
I must say they brighten the place up.

How lovely is that, such a cheery sight, haven't been out lately Balcony but hubby has bought himself a new camera, he likes a run out if its nice, I'll go with him one of these days and coax him to go towards Peterborough, there are a couple of very local to us villages en route that have for years had the first open bulbs in our area, be interesting to see how they are faring... Its funny you posting this now, only last week our local voluntary group Team Stamford planted over a thousand bulbs donated by our local nursery(they are always donating) along with Stamford in Bloom also volunteers, who care and look after the town and local villages, doing the work the council are paid to do..

Thank you all for your comments! 👍😀 The weather is indeed crazy, although very cloudy all day, we have had about 12C with a warm SW wind - who would have believed those sort of temps during the last week of November only a few years ago?

I don't know the variety of the Daffs planted out in Coneygear Park but I do know the ones I planted in the gardens of my church are not Paperwhite. They came in a mix of Daffodils which I first planted in pots on the balcony railings. When they had finished flowering I took them to the church gardens where I planted them together with a few other pots of Daffodils.

Lincs, it would be interesting to see if there are other early flowering bulbs in the villages you mention.

The only other time I've seen Daffodils flowering so early was one year just before Christmas in a small town near us called Godmanchester. But they were the normal yellow ones. They have been naturalised for decades! As I have a brother who lives there, & he likes gardening as much as I do, I will ask him if there are any Daffs in flower near where he lives.

Crikey!!! I'd almost forgotten what time of year it was for a minute there, Balc! They do look really pretty don't they! What a surprise for everyone who managed to see them.
I've a few spring shoots peeping through too...

Our local dentist has some that usually flower in December, and they are an early flowering form.

What an amazing sight and so very welcome.

I like it after Christmas when the glitter and sparkle goes and I can go out and buy a bunch of daffodils - I almost breathe a sigh of relief!!!

Lovely photos Balcony.

I could almost smell them - somehow felt my nostrils getting ready for the treat! Gorgeous. The next village to us has some yellow daffs that flower in early December church But I haven't been past for a while so can 't compare progress. I hope your church is grateful for all you do for its garden - you must be a great asset to them!(these things can so easily be taken for granted)

Lovely to see Hywel back with us today!

Thanks Kate, SB, Wildrose & Stera for your comments! I don't know if they have any smell - being a man I don't usually smell flowers! 😂 😂 😂

I haven't been able to ask my brother is there are any Daffs flowering where he lives as he is away from home for a few days.

You can't believe it can you! It is so strange but so cheery on a dull day!
My blue tits have been going in and out the bird box and must think it's early spring!
The only downside is that come spring the bulbs will have been and gone!

I'm sure Hywels right Balc, Paperwhites usually in flower for Christmas. I had some last year. Lovely to see them flowering in the earth, where they should be!

Thank you, Janey. I did a search for Paperwhite narcissi & looked at some of the pictures & I think everybody who said they are Paperwhites is right.

I didn't think the ones I'd planted at the back of Trinity were these because I know they are usually more expensive & being as these were in a bag of cheap mixed Daffs I thought surely they can't be! But they certainly look like them!

Years ago I planted daffs and they started flowering about this time, but they gave up after a few years because of a lack of a chilling period. I switched to jonquils which are more warm winter tolerant. As long as it gets really cold where you are, they should be fine.

I potted them.up a few weeks ago Balc but only leaves emerged with no buds.

That was a shame, Janey! 😢

Thanks for showing these beautiful flowers ... I love their simplicity.

I took a couple more photos of the one at the back of the church this morning, it's still going strong & there are lots of buds to come! Over the coming weeks I will take more photos.

I forgot to "stick my nose" in them though so I still can't say if they have any scent! Perhaps next time! 😂
