We've decked the hall, fleeced the Phormiums and pulled up the draw...

With temperatures of -5 forecast, we had little choice today but to protect the Phormiums if we have any hope of them surviving the winter. We lost 1 lovely big specimen last winter as no protection was provided. Well, it is France, and we were hoping to be spared the really cold snaps experienced in the UK! We sure do know better now.

I really don’t go much on the new garden sculptures though. We now have four staked, fleeced, tied and mulched objects looking very much like snowmen without any adornments. Might have to tie on a bit of tinsel at the very least.

Apart from filling up the bird feeders in the morning, we are set now for a few days tucked up in front of the log fire with a twinkling Christmas tree for company.

Dug up a couple of parnsips and swedes to go with the roast pork this evening, but very disappointed in both. Both were very poor examples of produce. Any tips?

Hi Babsieb, being tucked up in front of a log burner sounds ideal to me here with our dry lifeless gas central heating. I know it keeps all the rooms warm but there is nothing to compare to a real fire glowing and flaming away at this time of year.
I am supposed to be a veg grower but other than parsnips and swede taking a long time to develop and mature I can't think of anything to suggest. Sorry. :~((

Good luck with the -5 degrees. that sounds c c c cold!

Hi Ian

We managed 2 swedes a week ago, but the rest have barely developed - same with the parsnips. This is my first attempt at both these veg - so will try again and hope for improved results next time.

Is there any point in using last year's seed packets (opened, but sealed again)?

Rgds

Morning Babsie, The seed packet should have a use by date on. I always use my seeds up to the last date but then I'm tight fisted. Lol
