I love working in my garden but I also like sitting in the garden, reading a good book with the sun shining and the bird song around me – bliss. But I don’t like having to repaint and refurbish my wooden garden furniture every year. If I had suitable storage it wouldn’t be such a problem but being out all year means it does get tatty looking quickly. So….. I decided the get rid of my wooden table and chairs. (They are going along the road to a friend).

I fancied metal garden furniture so began searching and found they were very, very expensive! Some of the cheaper versions looked nice but I wanted a comfy chair with arms for my reading sessions. I looked on ebay and found a table…..

I think they look good together! I hope to find another chair but am not fussed whether it’s the same or not. I am keeping an eye on ebay and also around boot fairs, antique shops, etc etc.

Looks great Gee, maybe you may still get a warm spell to try it out this year. Quite agree about wooden furniture, there's plenty more interesting things to do in the garden than furniture maintenance.

Very true, Lily2. It's not cast iron, SBG, I think it is probably cast aluminium, quite light to handle. The chair is very comfy and I have a cusioned seat and back to go on it too :)

A good job there Gee, I have a couple of benches (Teak) but they are ready for recycling (the table went into my poly tunnel today) I quite fancy a couple of chairs and a table like yours! :~))

Brilliant Gee...fantastic idea. Our wooden table is looking rough too despite several coats of something or other that was s'posed to preserve it. We were talking of chucking it but it is structurally sound so I just throw a tablecloth over it when we entertain.
I really like your metal stuff tho...good old Ebay! Some of that metal furniture is bloomin' expensive to buy new so you must've saved yourself a packet.

Well, that was a good day's work, Gee! With your cushions in the chair and a nice cup of coffee, you'll be all set up for a relax...that is after the weeding, mowing, planting, pruning, etc etc.....LOL.

They really look very nice. Congratulations !

19 Oct, 2009

Quite elegant! What a satisfying project. Now what are you going to read, hmm?

19 Oct, 2009

Usually I read detective/thriller type books - sometimes I scare myself if I read at night!

20 Oct, 2009

I don't know if you have read any of Dick Francis' novels Gee but they are a must for me. All of them are based, in one way or another, around horses and the scandles within. :~))

20 Oct, 2009

Francis is funny, Digger. Enjoy Jonathan Gash's Lovejoy antique dealer series, too. But hooked on that Scot, Ian Rankin, myself: getting to know Edinburgh vicariously.

20 Oct, 2009

I think Gash's Lovejoy books were spoilt somewhat for me by that awful TV series of the same name!

20 Oct, 2009

I have read Ian Rankin too and enjoyed them immensely. I tried a Dick Francis novel some years ago, Ian, and just couldn't get into it. My favourites are Peter Robinson, Stuart Pawson and Peter James although I like a lot of the American detective/trhiller books, like Jonathan Kellerman, too :)

Who's a clever bunny then?

Great place to watch all the wildlife in your Rowan when you get it!!

Good work Gee.....well done:0)

20 Oct, 2009

The rowan tree is getting nearer! I have found a tree nursery in Norfolk which specialises in rowan trees and they do the one I want. I haven't ordered yet but will be doing so very soon :)

Great Job, Gee!
The chair & table look perfect!
I like Ian Rankin too, but mainly cos his books 'take me home' to Edinburgh!
I love a good murder, but still go for Christie & Marsh, & Patricia Cornwell, though I havent had time for leisure reading much lately! I do confess to reading a fair amount of 'chick-lit' as "bubble-gum for the brain" when I've overdone the textbooks!

Hi Gee, really fabulous job. As you know I have just refurbished a childrens garden chair. I note you use hammerite. I used to use that but find that Aldi metal paint, which comes in silver, black, green and white is much easier to use. The reason being, it flows on like gloss paint and you can clean your brush in white spirit and re-use the brush.

20 Jul, 2015

Thanks for that tip, Alan. I need to buy some paint for my front gate so will look out for it in Aldi at the weekend. I think I just used the hammerite because I already had it but it is difficult to work with, so sticky! The table is probably ready for a tidy up - didn't realise it was so long ago that I did it. Can't see much of it, covered in potted plants :)

21 Jul, 2015

Gee, the paint is not always available, as it comes in from time to time in the Seasonal Offers. I seem to remember seeing tins in our local store over the last few weeks though. I'm pretty sure it has the name 'Deco' on it. If you do get any and use it, you won't go back to Hammerite. I used to paint a handrail outside my Mothers bungalow. It took 2 hours using HR and half that time using the Deco. I have also used the white, on radiators in the house and loads of different projects. Good Luck. <;~))
