When I grow up

I want to be as big as you!

This Lavender ‘Hidcote’ was planted in June 2010 and just grew and grew.

Not surprisingly, eleven years later, it looks old and woody.

I have certainly had my money’s worth with it and did harvest lots of flowers this Summer, but there comes a time when a Lavender is past its best!

So, here’s a small one, purchased this morning, to hopefully grow as big and beautiful as the previous one.

My task this weekend is to dig up the old, then plant the new.

well it doesn't owe you any money does it? Are you are taking any cuttings from it before you dispose of it? Nice legacy for it if you can.

I've just removed 'White Elegance' which we planted 3 years ago, so you've both done well with yours. I have taken cuttings - we shall see if any take.

I hope it does just as well as the last one which looks really beautiful in your second photo. I do love lavender!

What a beauty it's been Shirley too.
Mine are the same. I've Munstead too and a strange floppy one with pointed blooms.
I've grown on mini plugs to replace them...big job for the Autumn.
Did see Monty planting new ones out last night, and the smaller the plants the better and trim off any flowers so the plants can focus on rooting. You maybe watched it, now you've been told twice..Haha!

I do love lavender, Shirley and your 11 year old one certainly was a giver!!! Lots of colour, scent and flower - love your new one too! It’ll look lovely as a replacement…

I agree, the new plant is nice, & bushy.

Thank you all for commenting. I love the 'Hidcote' variety, hence buying another. No cuttings taken yet . . . maybe tomorrow!

Lovely plant but it's a shame they get woody & straggly over time!

Indeed, but I have certainly had value for money with this one!

Hidcote is a lovely Lavender. Great colour.

I love lavender, you have chosen well, hope it does as well as its predecessor Shirley...

Lavender certainly did look lovely in its younger days, it is a shame that they go woody with age xx

Sue, I'm going to have to be in the right mood to remove the old and plant the new. Lots of gravel/stones to move, then dig through the clay! Oh well, it only has to be done once . . . :o)

I really can't complain, Loupylou, as it's grown so well for many years.

It was really lovely Shirley and you have given me an idea! I have to remove an enormous grass, lovely colour but has taken over and was thinking what I could put in its place!

Linda, my apologies for missing your comment! Did I send you a 'Hidcote' cutting some years ago?

Rose, glad I have given you an idea of what to plant when that grass has gone!

I think the Hidcote is probably the best and I'm not a fan of the French variety. Lavender is to me quintessentially English. Your original one certainly doesn't owe you anything does it? I hope your replacement is as good.

Julia, son popped round this afternoon and dug the old one out. Mind you, I had used the cutters to get it down to a few inches! New Lavender should be planted tomorrow . . . :o)

Ah those sons...they have their uses lol!

31 Aug, 2021

They sure do! I planted the new Lavender on Sunday morning . . . another gardening chore ticked off the list.
