Solanum standard will not grow

I have a solanum standard with small little purple flowers planted in a patio tub. the first year it was great the second year it didnt grow at all but i felt it still had life in it last year it grow beautifull, this year again it looks dead with out no shoots at all.
I also have a second plant that i brought last year this year it also looks dead . any one have any ideas ?

Answers
Solanum can be a bit fussy sometimes, although you wouldn't think so. They are also quite a short lived plant, so the first one you mentioned may just be coming to its end.
Hopefully, you'll get more answers though.

Its hard to tell without actually seeing the plant, Mallen, could you put a close-up photo on for us?
