What does spring growth look like?

I planted Hollyhock mallow last year. It was beautiful. I have not see any sign this spring of new growth. ( I live in Wisconsin). What does the new growth look like? Does it come up from the ground or does it grow off the old stalk? I dont know if my plant is dead or late.

Previous question
Assume you mean Lavatera, the woody based, large growing shrub? If you do, it should produce new leaves from the wood, near the base if you have cold winters, further up if not.
