Why are my bay trees looking so sorry for them selves.

I have 2 bay trees planted in good sized pots, they are shapped in to balls. The leaves are looking light green/yellow. Other bay's I have seen are quite dark green. Do I need to feed the with something?

our bay tree is in a pot and has the same look, so i dug out an 1" or so of the top compost and put in some good fresh compost and gave it a sprinkling of fish bone and blood.this was about a week ago and it is already looking a little better............steve
