I have a Christmas cacti over40 years old; its drooping its leaves what do I do?7

I ignore ours until their leaves start to droop and then water - seems to work for me but have no idea if it is what you are 'meant' to do.

Wow some age .

Can we see a photo please.

I left mine out in the rain for a few days and now taken back and left in greenhouse.

Try standing it in a bowl of water to give it a really good soak - be sure you let it drain well afterwards. Keep it out of strong sun. Check whether it needs repotting. Incidentally the green "leaves" aren't leaves, they are stems. The little hairs round the edges are the modified leaves!
