OK, I'm a novice.... Do you pinch hydrangea flowers when they are spent?

I love Hydrangeas and have half a dozen in my yard. I don't know whether or not to dead head the flowers when they are spent or not. I didn't in the fall and the stalks that had flowers are dead.

in the uk we leave the flower heads on until about march april to protect the tips from frost, so I suppose you can cut them off now but dont cut into the new growth
