we bought a 6' tree fern with only two 8" long ferns they died away 2 years now and still nothing we cut 5" off the top and found it hard with a hollow cup will new fronds grow from this we have 4 others at 4' to 6' with no problems is it beyond help?

VERY unlikely. Tree ferns are very susceptible to the cold and frost, and do not easily recover. Certainly if there was no growth last year, there will be none this year.
As you may appreciate with your healthy ones, they need very good frost protection to thrive.

I lost three Tree ferns in the winter of 2010 Blacker, I am sorry it looks like you have lost yours too. They need both the crown and base protecting in very cold winters.

If you wait until the end of the year and go looking in garden centres you may pick up another on quite reasonably priced.
