Yes generally speaking tomato plants need to be staked and you will need a minimum of a 10 inch pot to grow them in.

If you haven't got them yet the bush ones are easier outside as they are short, less prone to wind damage. Three or four canes tied at the top (or one of those wicker structures) may make tall tomatoes more secure
