Foxglove Question

Newcastle Upon Tyne, , United Kingdom Gb

I bought some yesterday but didn't read the Label untill this morning and there Biennial!! so that means i wont get flowers this year.. But I bought some last week at Wilkie's and it doesen't say Biennial on the Labels (or colour) there the smaller type also more expensive, so my question is, Do you know if i will get flowers from these this year..

Did you buy seeds or plants? I think plants, if they're pretty advanced, will flower this year - biennials usually start growing one year, flower the next summer, then die. Seeds are unlikely to reach flowering point this summer.

When I bought plants they flowered the same year. Then they self seeded and I got plants the following year too.

Dee you should get flowers this year if the plant is big enough and it gets well established so make sure you water it well when the weather is hot.

Make sure also that you collect any seed from dried flowers this year when it does flower because with foxgloves once they have flowered they usually die so to keep them going each year you need to collect the seed{wear gloves as the seed pods as well as the plant are poisonous} and you can either sow the fine seed in trays of compost or do what I do and shake the pods round the garden where I want them to flower.

If you ever have white ones they will not produce white flowers from any seed collected so if you want more white ones you have to buy new plants.

Also if you buy these plants already in flower you need to save any seed as the plant will most certainly die afterwards

Good Luck and hope you have a good display...

there are perennial ones that flower year after year. Digitalis lutea is a yellow one but the flowers are small and pale.
