I lost a big agapanthus last winter, whats the best way to protect my new (large potted) plant over a cold Northumbrian winter?

they're more vulnerable in pots in a cold winter - if the compost freezes for any length of time, the bulbs turn to mush. Also, some varieties are not hardy anyway, even in the ground.
Remove to a frost free place for the winter.
