Please help. A couple of days ago we bought some shoots of a beautiful yellow flowering plant in Madeira called Rocavenus. Have been unable to find any info on line, or equivalent English name.We (mum and I) need to know how to plant and what type of soil please. The chap we bought from spoke little English...

I think you have Roca de Venus. Ginger Lily this is a member of the ginger family. Search under Hedychium gardneranum.

This one appears to be endemic to Madeira, is tender - check under Hedychium gardnerianum for planting and care details. Must have a rhizome from which it grows, which might grow indoors and probably can be put outside during summer.
