Having had a bumper strawberry crop in early June, why are my plants full of flowers and have new fruit growing now in September?

Plants respond to various conditions to choose when to grow and flower - one of these is weather, so if we have a cool, damp spell after a hot and dry spell, they can get confused and think the cool damp spell (specially if its protracted) was winter. And then try to grow and fruit again.
