i have a spot in my garden that had a palm/fern plant which has since died. i would like to replace the plant with a plant that is hardy and green and takes very little looking after, as i am not a good gardener. what do you suggest?

Was the palm/fern a Cordaline and how long has it been dead. ? It may still have roots in the ground
