Does anyone out there know the best way to get rid of a tree stump? we can't afford to pay someone to do it so other ways, please. It was quite a large ash tree which was much too near houses and had to be cut down.

Drilling holes into stumps, filling with petrol or diesel, and leaving 4 a bit or burning is good, but, type "eucalyptus" into the search box and see what can happen with eucalyptus - not that the same effect will be produced with an ash tree. Leaving the stuff to work is the key! We have several stumps of ancient birch trees along one boundary, totall dead, but still bearing the tell-tale criss-cross marks made by a chainsaw, or similar.

you can buy a product called 'tree root and stump killer ' ... i think thats what it's called. from b&q or a large garden centre. i have used this on a few trees and it was successful, and only a few pounds a box!!!

I'm not sure whether you want to kill your treestump or physically get rid of it. IF you want to get rid of it, there is a machine called a stump-grinder that is placed over the stump and it has a grinding mechanism on the underside which reduces the stump to saw dust. Local authorities use these, but I don't know whether they are hireable or useable without special training?

You can use diesel or creosote drill holes then fill them in then cover with plastic when it as soaked in keep filling holes for two weeks that will kill it

Diesel will kill roots like popular.... but why add a preservative to something u wsnt to decay and disappear. URBAN MYTH perhaps. Roots will need a bacteria or fungus to rot them. Get the proper agents to dispose of the tree stump rather than adding the preserving waxes and petroleum distillates.

I do not advise the following for you if the tree is near the house but out of interest there is the following method.
Buy some sodium chlorate which is basically a weed killer. Dig out a hollow in the trunk and fill with the SC. Allow it to be absorbed over many weeks and top up if necessary. Make sure there is no powder left at all. Then set fire to it! This is potentially dangerous so beware SC is used in home made bombs, but if done properly the stump will burn right down into the roots.
For anyone else interested proceed with caution and research this method first of all.
