Each year the tips of the growth on my apple tree become white and shrivel. The main body of the tree remains fine. How can I treat this?

Sorry to be so tardy with the help on this, Gillian, but I was waiting for someone from the UK to answer. Maybe my more general knowledge can help. What time of year does this seem to happen? Does it seem to coincide with very warm, dry weather, or with cold, rainy weather? Are any pictures of the fresh damage available?
